Am I a fucking time traveler? |
Quote |
Sorry for the vulgarity.
This is an old issue of mine, as old as my reg here. So it seems that I can send posts to the past, exactly 1 hour into the past.
If I post a comment it automatically gets a date which is (my date) - 1 hour.
So, if you want to bet sport events I can give you scores 1 hour forward. It can be useful, can't it?
Oh, and the TZ in my profile is set to the right GMT+1 value.
Seriously, DAFAQ? Please help!
Thanks in advance!

No need to be so vulgar, indeed.
Make sure you also check your daylight saving time.
Eg, at the moment, you are in the GMT+2 zone due to daylight saving.

I am not sure that I should change the TZ because of daylight saving. It's a little odd.

Well yeah, it shows an hour less for me too at the moment.
Maybe we can ask ult to add automatic DST detection, if he has time.

As different countries implement the DST differently (and some even don't), the only way to "fix" that is by stealing users' data -erm I mean, collecting whether DST is active on the user's computer without they knowing about it.
Of course, I could add a "Detect Daylight Saving time automatically" checkbox to the Profile options to respect users' privacy, but ultimately that data will have to be fetched from the users' computers as it is the only reliable way to know whether their DST is on or not (IP detection is not effective as it can be fooled with proxies and such).
Of course I can make the processing completely invisible to the end-user. I guess a checkbox to choose whether the user wants the time to be automatically adjusted to DST or not will be the best plan of action (and have it checked by default, as many people probably wouldn't even find it, but have the checkbox there so the user can toggle the DST time in case they don't want it).

The last method sounds good to me.

Guess you will be able to enjoy your time travelling ability for some more time, seeing as there are currently some higher priority tasks.
Implement DST detection >> Added to dev tree with low priority.
Meanwhile, as it is in the concept phase, there are still some functionality that must be thought before any development begins. For example, what will happen if the user has selected a timezone display different than his own?
Following my thinking, if the user has DST detection ON, the time should be recalculated depending solely on the user's comp's DST settings and not whether his actual timezone corresponds to his selected display timezone. The DST adjustment can be easily toggled off by unchecking that checkbox, so this is probably the best course of action. Not sure if I'm overlooking something though. Might need some more thinking and feedback.
With some more thinking, if the user uses a different display timezone than his own, he is probably used to calculate posts' time relatively to his time, so the above paragraph makes even more sense.

DST detection is now implemented.
BTW Frz, do you have Daylight Saving Time at the moment? Just wondering. If you're close to Sat, your DST probably ended before mine started.
Also, anyone who has questions or experiences issues with the DST post here.
I've only tested the DST detection in Windows and Android.
On Windows, you must have the "Automatically adjust clock for Daylight Saving Time" option enabled. For Windows 7: Control Panel > Clock, Language and Region > Date and Time > Change time zone... > Automatically adjust clock for Daylight Saving Time. It should be checked by default so don't worry if you didn't mess with it before.
On Android, the time zones already appear to be offseted by the DST when choosing your time zone by region, seems like DST is hidden and always enabled (or at least I couldn't find the option to disable it in Android 4.0.4). It will work nicely as long as you choose the correct time zone then.
I haven't tested it on Linux nor Mac.
ps. You can disable the automatic DST detection on your profile if you don't like it.

ult_combo: DST detection is now implemented. . Yay! *Hi5*
ult_combo: BTW Frz, do you have Daylight Saving Time at the moment? Just wondering. If you're close to Sat, your DST probably ended before mine started. Yep, DST is set in default and Sat and I are in the same TZ. It means we have "winter time" atm so the clocks are adjusted backward with 1 hour.
Now my local time and the LAH's indicated time are the same.
